Toddler Swearing
Swear words can be picked up from various sources and toddlers will delight in using them at the most mortifying moments.
Try to stay calm and don't panic if they come out with an expletive, the important thing is to deal with the situation in the right way.
- Try to assess where they have heard the word from. Is it a word that you or another family member have said? If you think so then you need to make a real effort to watch what you say. If you think that they may have picked it up from nursery then have a quiet word with the teacher.
- If they say a swear word just once, try not to react. If they use the word again calmly say “Please do not say that word”.
- By ignoring the word, your child should forget about it.
- Don't shout or tell them off.
- If you react to undesirable language then your tot will think you are rewarding them with attention.
