Phobias and Toddlers
Some phobias cannot be explained and although irrational to others, to the toddler they can present real terror. Other phobias are passed on from a parent or someone around the child. I can hold up my hands and say all my kids have a phobia of spiders passed on from me (though I try to act brave!).
How to deal with toddler phobias
- Never make fun of their phobia. No matter how silly you may find it, to them it’s horrifying and they are scared.
- Be patient.
- If the fear causes problems with day to day life consult your health visitor.
- Give your child plenty of love and reassurance.
- Praise even the slightest breakthrough.
