The Shy Toddler

Shyness in toddlers is a common occurrence. With some toddlers, as they get used to new people their shyness wanes. Other toddlers continue to be shy around unfamiliar adults and children and may need more encouragement to interact with them.

What you can do to help your shy toddler

  • When you are talking to someone give your child an opening to participate in the conversation.  But don’t force the issue.
  • Make conversation with people, such as the person serving you in a shop. Lead by example.
  • Act out social situations in play with your child, to give them confidence.
  • Go to mums and tots groups, the park or swimming. Anywhere that your toddler can get used to being around other adults and children.
  • Most toddlers will become less shy as they get older.
