Toddler Health - Childhood Obesity

An increasing number of children in the UK are now classed as obese, with figures showing that a frightening 14% of boys and 17% of girls (age 2-15 years) fall into this category.

What can we do to help our children?

There are lots of small changes that can be made to a child's lifestyle that will help them maintain a healthy weight. They are:

  • Increase the amount of exercise that your child gets.
  • Give the correct size portions to your child.
  • Give healthy foods both as meals and snacks.
  • Limit time on the TV, computer or games console. Instead encourage your child to play or run around.
  • See your GP who can refer you to a dietician. Ask your health visitor for support.
  • Lead by example!!! Undertake activities as a family. Encourage your child to participate in sports or leisure pursuits. Change your lifestyle with them, make positive decisions regarding diet and exercise, you'll be surprised how much better you feel and how much fun you have!
  • Give attention rather than food. Reward good behaviour with a sticker/bubbles/crayons and a hug and lots of praise, rather than sweets or chocolate.
  • Children very often eat through boredom, so keep them busy.
  • Make sure they have enough water to drink. Dehydration can leave you feeling hungry.
  • REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT BEING UNKIND SAYING NO TO JUNK FOOD. They may be upset when you refuse at first, but by saying no you are protecting their health. As their weight drops they will have more energy and feel happier and healthier.
  • A little amount of their favourite treat is ok occasionally. They will appreciate it more if they only have it now and again.
