Toddler Health - Dealing With Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a natural action which starts in the womb and many babies and toddlers find it comforting. Obviously the problem with a thumb (or finger) is that it cannot be taken away. Some babies will naturally give up thumb sucking when the reflex to suck disappears. Toddlers may give up due to peer pressure, others though may need a bit of encouragement.

How to stop the thumb sucking habit

  • Gently remind your toddler that she is a big girl now and doesn't need to suck her thumb, whenever she sucks her thumb.
  • Distract her with an activity, especially one which will keep her hands busy.
  • Cuddle her, get her to hold your hands or get her to hug you with 2 hands, so that her thumb doesn't automatically go in her mouth.
  • Reward with a sticker chart. Maybe thumb free morning/afternoon/evening each warrant a sticker. She can have a treat when she has collected enough stickers.
  • Be patient and calm, don't ridicule her thumb sucking and do not get cross.
  • Praise your child when she does well.
  • Read “The Little Bear who sucked his Thumb” a story for young children, complete with sticker chart. Available from Thumb Sucking Help >>
  • Use a thumb or finger guard to prevent sucking as a comfort. Available from Thumb Guard >>

Try not to worry too much, it is unlikely any permanent damage will be caused to teeth, whilst the child still has their baby teeth. The wrinkly thumb can be treated with a cortisone cream.
