Staying Safe in the Sun
Babies and children have ultra delicate skin that needs to be protected in the sun. The thinning ozone layer means that the suns rays are getting stronger and stronger. Over exposure to the sun can lead to skin cancer, which is now the most common form of cancer in the UK. Children need to be brought up with skin protection being second nature.
Sun Safety Tips:
- Children (and adults) need to have sun cream applied at regular intervals. The sun cream should have a protection factor of at least 50 for children and should also be water resistant.
- Use UV resistant swim wear.
- Make sure your child wears a UV resistant sun hat. A legionnaires style hat with a flap at the back will protect the skin at the back of the neck too.
- Children should also be encouraged to wear sun glasses.
- A sun proof tent or shelter would be beneficial especially on the beach.
- The sun is at its strongest between the hours of 12-3pm. Children should stay out of the sun between these hours where possible. If they must be exposed to the sun at this time then you should be extra careful. Stay in the shade if you can.
- Use a sunshade in the car and a parasol or sunshade on the buggy.
- Make sure they stay hydrated, lots of drinks and ice lollies!
- Set a good example. Use cream, wear a hat and sun glasses.
